MTP/MPO Solutions for Datacenter High-Density Needs

As data centers scale to meet the demands of cloud computing, AI-driven workloads, and ultra-high-bandwidth applications, MTP®/MPO fiber solutions play a crucial role in ensuring efficient, high-speed, and space-saving connectivity. These high-density fiber optic systems optimize network performance, scalability, and cable management while supporting 400G, 800G, and beyond.

Why MTP/MPO for High-Density Data Centers?

  1. Maximized Fiber Density in Minimal Space
  • Up to 72 fibers in a single connector, drastically reducing cable volume and congestion.
  • Enables higher port densities on switches, patch panels, and structured cabling.
  1. Future-Proof Scalability
  • Supports network upgrades from 10G/40G to 100G/400G/800G using breakout cables and cassettes.
  • Compatible with next-gen Ethernet and InfiniBand architectures for high-performance computing (HPC) and AI clusters.
  1. Simplified Cable Management & Faster Deployment
  • Pre-terminated MTP/MPO assemblies eliminate on-site fiber splicing, reducing installation time by up to 75%.
  • Modular MTP cassettes and patch panels allow for quick network expansion and reconfiguration.
  1. High-Performance, Low-Loss Connectivity
  • MTP Elite® (low-loss) connectors ensure minimal insertion loss, critical for long-reach and high-speed connections.
  • Reduced latency and enhanced reliability for data center interconnects and backbone networks.

Choosing the Right MTP/MPO System

  • Fiber Type: Select OM3/OM4 (Multimode) for short-reach or OS2 (Single-mode) for long-distance transmission.
  • Polarity Management: Use Type-A, Type-B, or Type-C polarity to ensure correct signal routing.
  • Insertion Loss Considerations: Deploy low-loss (Elite) MTP connectors for optimized optical budgets in high-speed applications.

Background Information on MTP/MPO

MTP is an advanced MPO connector developed by US Conec, fully compliant with MPO standards. Designed for high-speed networks like 40G/100G, MTP/MPO connectors support 8 to 24 fibers. They come in male (with pins) and female (without pins) versions, with pins ensuring precise alignment and protecting connector interfaces.

MTP connectors have guide grooves (keys) to ensure proper alignment in adapters. They come in two types: key-up to key-down (180° flipped connection) and key-up to key-up (same-position connection).

MTP/MPO trunk cables serve as permanent links between modules, available in 12, 24, 48, and 72 fibers, typically terminated with 12-fiber or 24-fiber connectors. Polarity follows TIA standards (Type A, B, and C), according to these methods, there are Type A, TypeB and Type C MTP/MPO cables with different structures. These MTP/MPO cables are usually connected with different MTP/MPO cassettes and fiber patch cables to ensure the correct polarity of the optical path.
